POSITION: GROUNDSKEEPER

DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision performs manual labor and some supervisory work in preparing and maintaining public grounds. An employee in this class is expected to maintain the grounds in acceptable condition. Work involves maintenance activities such as cutting grass and brush, removing debris, and establishing and maintaining fences. General instruction and supervision are received from an administrative or maintenance supervisor, but an employee is expected to use some initiative and work with minimum supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Cuts grass and brush and trims tress so that they do not interfere with creating a safe environment;
  • Marks court and field boundaries for such sports as tennis, basketball, baseball and softball ;
  • Assists with the repair and maintenance of fences and other enclosures;
  • Plants, waters, sods, sprays and trims lawns and gardens and cleans walkways;
  • Plants, cultivates and propagates plants in flower beds and on grounds
  • Mows grass and rakes leaves
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of grounds keeping and simple horticultural practices;
  • Knowledge of that care of flowers, trees and shrubs common to large institutions;
  • Ability to work long hours while standing;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work;
  • Ability to lift seventy (70) pounds or more.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and (3) three years experience at the journeyman level ; or
  • Completion of an apprenticeship
