POSITION: PAINTER

DESCRIPTION

This is skilled work on the journey man level in the painting, decorating and refinishing of building interiors and exteriors and other structures, equipment and furnishings. . General instruction and supervision are received from an administrative or maintenance supervisor, but an employee is expected to use some initiative and work with minimum supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

• Smooth walls and other surfaces by using sandpaper, brushes or steel wool;
• Removes excess paint and prepares surfaces for paintings by using scraper, paint remover or wire brushes;
• Fills holes, cracks and joints with putty plaster or other filler;
• Selects premixed paints or mixes paints to match specified colors by adding required portions of oil, pigment, thinner and other substances;
• Applies paints, shellac, varnish, enamel or other coating to prepare surfaces using brushes, spray guns or paint rollers;
• Creates special effects and designs with the use of brushes, cloth or fingers;
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods used in the trade of a painter;
• Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to be observed in the trade;
• Skill in the care and use of the standard tools and equipment in the trade of a painter
• Ability to work long hours while standing;
• Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work

• Ability to lift seventy (70) pounds or more.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. and (3) three years experience at the journeyman level ; or
• Completion of an apprenticeship
