John H. Woodson Jr. High School
Anne-Louise Wilkins is the fourth of five children who, as a child, would gaze at the night sky and dream of becoming an astronaut and traveling to the moon. Currently the chairperson of the Science Department at the John H. Woodson Junior High School, she attended Hollins University just outside Roanoke, Virginia, where she obtained bachelor’s degrees in French and Science, and then embarked on graduate studies in Chemistry at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
While at Hollins, Anne-Louise received her first National Science Foundation (NSF) fellowship award and worked as a summer lab assistant in organic chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. Subsequent NSF awards have taken her to Indiana University, Boston University and the University of Maryland.
After having submitted proposals, she has been selected to make presentations at the International STEM Education Association’s (ISEA) annual conference on two separate occasions, and most recently, was invited to be a presenter at the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) annual conference in St. Louis, Missouri in April 2019. However, the career achievement that provides her the most joy, pride and true satisfaction is to have been nominated by several former students and chosen for inclusion in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”
