It has often been said, “I did not choose my profession, it chose me.” That statement gives a true description of my educational journey. As a student in the public-school system attending the Joseph Gomez Elementary School under the leadership of the late Ms. Erma B. Sewer, I was exposed to many opportunities to partake in the cultural aspect of education. Such opportunities as communication arts showcase helped to expose me to various forms of literature. The late Mrs. Geraldine Heath, my fourth-grade teacher, introduced me to the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Series.
My commitment to my community is evident in the work I have been doing as a member of the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority. As an active member in the sorority, I have co-chaired the Academic Cotillion. Through this medium, I have worked directly with high school students to educate them on various career paths/ options that they can chose by hosting workshops that included members of our community. I have also spearheaded “Toys you can’t Return” (a component of the Academic Cotillion) a workshop that discourages teenage pregnancy. As a member of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, I have assisted with our annual community breakfast that serves as a means of feeding and bringing the community together in a joyful and thankful manner.
As a proud “Hawklet” of the Class of 1987, I remain active in various reunion activities. I’m proud to state that we were very instrumental in presenting the Roy l. Schidner Hospital Dialysis unit with a sizable monetary contribution.
Working on the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee over the years as the Co-Chair for the Prince and Princess Committee with Ms. Francisque Roberts has been a rewarding experience for me. This civic duty allowed me to have a greater appreciation for my culture. I was able to work directly with the younger gems of our community in building relationship with their fellow competitors.
