The Virgin Islands Department of Education is pleased to announce the St. Thomas-St. John Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition, scheduled for Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 8:30 am. This exciting event will take place at the 13D Innovation and Research Center on the Orville Kean Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Structured to challenge students' abilities, the MATHCOUNTS Competition comprises a written segment, where participants tackle complex, multi-step problems both with and without calculators, and a countdown round, a fast-paced, one-on-one oral contest among top scorers from the written portion.
The media and the entire community are invited to attend this dynamic competition, which will showcase 42 students from public, private, and parochial schools. This year's participating schools include Lockhart K-8 School, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, All Saints Cathedral School, and Antilles School. The top 10 students from this competition will advance to the state competition, scheduled for March 21, 2024, on St. Croix.
Since its establishment in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Insurance, MATHCOUNTS has engaged over six million students. The program's mission is to provide stimulating math programs for middle schoolers of all abilities, fostering confidence and positive attitudes towards problem-solving. Targeting grades 6-8, MATHCOUNTS recognizes this pivotal stage where a passion for math must be nurtured.
The St. Thomas – St. John Chapter MATHCOUNTS program is proudly sponsored and coordinated by the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II and the Virgin Islands Department of Education.
